Why use Categories?
Find what you need faster
Avoid unnecessary purchases
Track spending by category
Plan & pack smarter
How do Categories Work?
Suggested Categories
Custom Categories
Flexible & Simple
Examples of How Categories Help
Packing for Trips
Filter by Camping Gear to make sure you have everything.
Decluttering
Check Clothing to see how many jackets you actually wear.
Smarter Shopping
Look at Electronics before buying another charger or pair of headphones.
Best Practices
✔ Use broad categories when you don’t need much detail (e.g., “Cookware” instead of “3-Quart Saucepans”). ✔ Be specific when it helps (e.g., “Running Shoes” vs. just “Clothing”). ✔ Regularly check your categories to spot trends—like where you spend the most or what you rarely use.
Viewing & Editing Things
Things List: Browse all items you’ve added in the Things section.
Search or Filter: Look up items by category, brand, or other criteria to quickly find what you need.
Open Thing Details: Click the item’s card to view the details, edit the information, change its Spot, or delete the item.
Check Summaries: If you’ve entered cost or weight, you can see total cost or total weight in certain aggregated views (like Sets or Events).
Assigning a Single Thing to a Spot
In the Thing’s details, you can update the current spot it is in by selecting Move , then from the list of Places & Spots select Move Here for the location you are putting it in.
If you move the item physically (e.g., from your bedroom to your garage), simply update its Spot to keep your inventory accurate.
Thing Filter
The Thing Filters panel helps you quickly find, organize, and analyze your Things by applying search, grouping, and summary options. You can access the panel by selecting next to the search.
Search-By
Choose how you want to search for a Thing (multiple can be selected, and at least one has to be):
Name - Search by the Thing’s name.
Category - Search by the category assigned to the Thing.
Description - Search for keywords within the Thing’s description.
Brand - Find Things by their brand (e.g. Patagonia, Apple).
Acquired From - Search based on where you got the Thing (e.g., Amazon, REI, Craiglist, Grandma).
Grouped-By
Choose how you want to group the results for easier comparison and different analysis:
Category - View Things grouped by category (e.g., “Shoes, Electronics”).
Brand - See all the Things you have from a specific brand.
Acquisition Source - Organize by where/who you acquired Things from.
Summary Type
Decide how to summarize the results:
Count of Things - Shows how many Things fall under each group.
Sum of Cost - Displays the total cost of Things in each group (if costs have been entered).
Applying Filters
Once you’ve selected your search, grouping, and summary preferences, tap Apply Filters to see results.
Using filters helps you quickly find specific items, track spending patterns, and get insights into your inventory–whether you’re organizing gear, decluttering, or planning a purchase.
Pro Tips
Start with Key Items: Input your most important or commonly used gear first, add more as you have the time and energy.
Add Details Over Time: Populate optional fields (brand, model, purchase date) when it’s convenient.
Add Things Right After You Get Them: The perfect time to add your Things to Kwipoo, when you have all the information you need.
Check Your Purchase Histories - many stores and retailers allow you to see everything you’ve purchased from them by going to your account on their website. This is a great way to knock out adding a bunch of Things and enter all the juicy details.
Move a Thing in the Real World? Move it in Kwipoo: Keep your inventory accurate by updating the Thing’s Spot if you move it around.
Leverage Categories: Even simple categorization (e.g., “Tools,” “Clothing,” “Camping”) helps you filter items later, as well as analyze what you have a lot of and what you spend your money on.
